Opening Reception:
“Mayfly” – Claire Mack and Barbie Stattman

Opening on January 13th, 2016, Urban Light Studios presents “Mayfly”, featuring Barbie Stattman and Claire Mack. Their bodies of work create wonder, whimsy, and a sense of the ephemeral through the use of magical realism.

Barbie Stattman is a freelance artist from Colorado Springs, CO. She attended the College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia and earned a BFA in Illustration in 2016. She expresses her love for visual storytelling by incorporating her fascination with history, folklore, and surrealism into organic, decorative compositions.

Claire Mack is a native Californian, though spent most of her life in the cool, rainy, moss-covered NW. She earned a BFA from the California College of the Arts in Painting. Viewing artmaking as a source of transcendence, she believes that art has a profound healing influence on artist and viewer alike. Her work portrays figurative images, symbolic beings that represent inner experiences. She often uses imagery from nature hoping to provide a common visual language that is both soothing and provocative.

Opening night features live music by Justin Chan.

Opening on December 9th, “Sentient” brings together the newest body of work from Veronica Mortellaro. Using ink and watercolor, Veronica explores what it means to be fully human. Each of her works feels familiar and intimate, haunting yet sensual. Veronica’s medium forces serendipitous moments, casting figures that represent both strength and frailty.

Veronica grew up in Fort Collins, earning her BFA at Colorado State University. Prior to relocating to Seattle, she developed chronic pain that would change her life. The figures in her work represent not only the sorrow and fear she has experienced, but the sensuality, power, and human connection that emerged.

Cyrus Kanga an avid traveler is based out of Redmond WA.  His photographic works fall between the aesthetic and documentary.  In Cyrus’s own words If these photographs have a purpose it is this: they humanize.  I photograph to create a connection…to capture a pose a thought a glimpse a moment.  Whatever the situation these images stir up unexpected feelings in me.  Transcending time my mind takes me back to the moments when a smile is pure inspiration when eyes respond to a friendly gesture when laughter of children brings down boundaries when a brilliant scene is heavenly communion.  These are moments caught in stillness to stir movement within one’s inner depth.”  You can view Cyrus’s work in person this Friday September 13th click here to link to the facebook invite. www.cyruskanga.com
